Quote of the Day: “The vision of the left, full of envy and resentment, takes its worst toll on those at the bottom — whether black or white — who find in that paranoid vision an excuse for counterproductive and ultimately self-destructive attitudes and behaviour.” Thomas Sowell

Good to see the Editors publish an op-ed by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation today on the Editorial Page. (I thought I remembered that TheRecord had published another article by the CTF a few months ago but trying to search for it using the so-called “search” feature at TheRecord.com is a waste of cycles.) Jasmine Moulton from the CTF writes about the massive debt that the Ontario government has accumulated over the last year – and she also comments on the stupid stunt by the PC’s government house leader Paul Calandra when he tabled a motion to reduce the salary of one of his opponents to $500 a week. Good read.

On the other hand, we have the third op-ed by Mulugeta Dilnesahu of the just dreadful Community Editorial Board. You might remember (hopefully not, but I do…) his first op-ed appeared back September of last year where he claimed that because he couldn’t find a job in his field in Canada (population studies…), and because his last name was hard to pronounce, employers in Canada were racists. Wow. His second op-ed was a rambling, almost unreadable attack on social media or something. His third op-ed today talks about the plight of Ethiopians in Waterloo Region. Here is his first sentence: “An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 Africans of Ethiopian origin are living in Waterloo Region.” When I read that I thought – wow, that’s really a lot of people from that country. And then I started to do a bit of research. At the beginning of 2020, there were 617,000 people in the RofW. According to this report report last undated in 2016, there were about 15,000 Blacks in this region. I think I’m safe to say that I can update this number to about 20,000 which is close to the 3.9% of Blacks in the Region as reported in TheRecord numerous times. So, with his Masters of Population Studies, Mr. Dilnesabu claims that 25% to 50% of all Black people in the entire Region of Waterloo come from one small African country. And this guy can’t find a job in his field in Canada because of racism. Shocking.

  1. Oh Rita, I only read your reviews today. Before rumbling in this comment, I would say thank you for paying attention to my articles. Now, I hope you know the difference between ‘estimates and accurate’ figures. Estimates are not verified and it could be far less or more. So, I know a good number of Ethiopians live in the region. I don’t have any precise number. If that disqualify me from my expertise then I understand your position… that I’m under qualified. I can feel your anger in your face that someone from Africa is given a chance to express their feelings about social justice…
